Our History

160 years of the Deepwater Races – one of Australia’s oldest racing traditions

In 1864, Mr. Emmanuel Barratt, (owner of the then Deepwater Hotel), and his friend Mr. William Thomas Cadell (from Deepwater Station on whose land the Hotel was built) came together to hatch a plan for a horse race in 1865.

Little did they know that their idea would become a tradition that endures to this day, as the race continues to be held on the very same grounds of Deepwater Station, 160 years after their visionary decision.

Our Members & Volunteers

At the heart of the Deepwater Jockey Club are our dedicated volunteers, whose passion and commitment make each race day a success. Our volunteers play a vital role in ensuring that everything runs smoothly both on and off the track. Without their hard work and enthusiasm, many of the traditions and community connections we’ve built over the years wouldn’t be possible.

If you’re passionate about horse racing and want to get involved, we’re always looking for new volunteers to join our team. Whether you can spare a few hours on race day or offer support throughout the year, your contribution is invaluable.

Together, with our volunteers and community supporters, we continue to make the Deepwater Races a cherished tradition in the region.
